Taste Berries
Oh that men would give thanks to the Lord
for his goodness and for his wonderful works
to the children of men!
Psalm 107:8 (NKJV)
In Africa there is a fruit called the "taste berry", so-named because it makes everything eaten after it taste sweet and pleasant. Sour fruit, even if eaten several hours after the "taste berry" seems sweet and delicious.
For Christian, gratitude is the "taste berry" that makes everything else taste sweet. When our hearts are filled are filled with gratitude, nothing that comes our way seems unpleasant to us.
most often we are grateful only when we are happy with our circumstances or enjoy what have been given. However, we may need to be taught like children to say "thank you" for what is given to us whether we like it or not.
A habit of giving thanks in all circumstances helps us to look beyond our immediate situation and see our lives from a higher perspective.
Sometimes the gifts given to us may not appear to be good gifts or gifts we desire. But when we learn to thank God in all things, we discover that the gifts we've receive are exactly what we need.
Gratitude can also help a person who is mourning, or lighten the load of a person carrying a heavy burden. It can dispel loneliness and give strength to a person in ill health.
George Herbert wrote this beautiful "thank you" Prayer:
Thou hast given so much to me,
Give one thing more- a grateful heart.
Not thankful when it pleases me,
As if thy blessings had spare days,
But such a heart, whose pulse may be thy praise.
Keep the "taste berry" of gratitude in your hearts and all life will be sweeter.
